READING RAILROAD EXHIBITION OPEN April 12, 2008 to January 10, 2009:
Saturday April 12, 2008


Come celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the Reading Company by visiting the exhibit titled "All Aboard."
From "mother hubbards" to the Rambles, this exhibit is a comprehensive history of what was once the biggest company in the world. Renowned local historian, Benjamin Bernhart is our guest curator. The exhibit will close January 10, 2009.
This exhibit is sponsored by the Norfolk Southern Corp. and Mogel, Speidel, Bobb, & Kershner Law Firm.


FIRST SATURDAY PROGRAM: "Memoirs of Pleasant Valley"

Jonathan L. Shalter, III, noted local photographer of beautiful nature and history will present the program entitled, "Memoirs of Pleasant Valley." Refreshments will be served at 9:30 AM. $1.00 per person donation for members and $2.00 donation for non-members will help defray the cost of refreshments.) The program begins at 10 AM.

Program: "Regina Leininger, Native American Captive"

Tuesday, September 9, at 1:30PM the Historical Society of Berks County Auxiliary will meet for a meeting and program. The program is entitled,"Regina Leininger, Native American Captive," presented by Pastor Philip K. Smith, former pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchsburg, burial place of Regina. Refreshments will follow the program.


THE FIRST ANNUAL BENEFIT MAD HATTER PARTY

The FIRST ANNUAL BENEFIT MAD HATTER PARTY will be held at the Hendel House Saturday, September 13, 6 till 9:30 PM. There will be a cash bar, buffet, and horsdoeuvres. Dinner entertainment will be provided by Chip Breau and the Jazz Kats. Wear your favorite hat. There will be prizes and surprises. FREE PUPPET SHOW : COLORES DEL AGUA, THE COLORS OF WATER

Historical Society of Berks County

In celebration of Latin American Month, the Historical Society of Berks County is presenting a FREE and open to the public puppet presentation entitled, "Colores del Agua, the Colors of Water" by Renaissance Artist Puppet Company, on Saturday, September 20, at 2 PM.
The two Latin American folktales, based on water creation myths, have Bilingual aspects and are told with rod, mouth and marionette puppets, and mask work. Original music, influenced by the Mesoamerican and the Caribbean cultures, accompanies these stories. Call the Historical Society of Berks County for more information: 610-375-4375

SAVE THE DATE! Our popular "3" CENTURIES IN BERKS TOUR will include a 20th Century home and therefore we will identify this year's tour as our 4 CENTURIES IN BERKS. Our tour will be held October 4, 2008, 9AM to 4 PM. This year we will be exploring architectural treasures in western Berks. Advance ticket price - $22 per person (drive on your own) Day of tour ticket price - $25 (drive on your own) Tickets will also be sold the day of the tour at the Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchburg.
A bus will be provided for your convenience on a first come first served basis. Bus tour ticket price - $45 per person. Your host will be George M. Meiser, IX, HSBC President.

In honor of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birthday, the Historical Society of Berks County will celebrate family life during the early-to-mid nineteenth century. Activities for the day include: measuring ingredients for cornbread, butter churning, rolling out pie dough for apple tarts, quilt construction, stenciling, and more. This event is FREE TO THE PUBLIC, and appropirate for children ages 2 to 12. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Rudy Husband, public relations and media communications specialist for the Norfolk Southern Railway, will present the program entitled, "Berks County and the Norfolk Southern Corridor." Learn what the company is doing to ease highway congestion and what a key role Berks County plays in the northeast rail network. (Refreshments will be served at 9:30 AM. $1.00 per person donation for members and $2.00 donation for non-members will help defray the cost of refreshments.) The program begins at 10 AM.
